La Querce Seconda

La Querce Seconda is a small, organic Chianti Classico estate that is located between San Casciano Val di Pesa and Montespertoli in the northernmost corner of the DOCG region, an area noted for its freshness.  Niccolo Bernabei is the second generation of his winemaking family, and in 1995, he and Linda Sandkvist took the project to a more serious level. Their property stretches for about 45 hectares, covering untouched forests, olive orchards, a lovely agritourismo, and naturally farmed vineyards.  Niccolo and Linda are devoted to using only Sangiovese in their Chianti and the couple exert continual effort in maintaining the soil in order to make sure the vines express the terroir of the area. With only naturally occurring yeasts, extremely low sulfur practices, and very old and large oak use; the expression they can achieve from their beautifully cared for vines is extraordinary.

The basic 2014 Chianti from La Querce Seconda is anything but basic. This is a 100% Sangiovese from organic vineyards located just outside the Chianti Classico zone.  The Sangiovese grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel using only ambient yeasts, then kept in steel for one year before bottling. The resulting wine is super-fresh and red fruited with excellent acidity and cut. This is the essence of pure Sangiovese. This is a very impressive wine that excels beyond its category.

The 2014 Chianti Classico comes from La Querce Seconda’s pristine organic fruit that grows on galestro soils of loose marl and limestone in San Casciano Val di Pesa.  Hand harvested at about 2.5 tons per hectare, the wine is left to ferment in stainless steel before it is moved to 10-year-old, 2000-liter French oak tonneau. This is 100% Sangiovese from vines up to 45 years old and all estate bottled.  This is more classically structured than the basic Chianti with remarkable depth of flavor and structure.  Bottled with only 40mg of SO2.
