Reichsrat Von Buhl

Deidesheim, Pfalz, Germany

Reichsrat von Buhl has been a family-owned winery for more than 150 years, and has belonged to the circle of the most prestigious wineries in Germany for just as long. Since it was founded in 1849, Reichsrat von Buhl has made its wines in a terroir-dominated, timeless style that has never been oriented to fashion, but always to the grapes’ origins in the best soils of Deidesheimer and Forster. Reichsrat von Buhl is certified organic, and is an active ambassador of both natural, sustainable viticulture and of the best German wines. Since 2013, it has been led by a new team and technical director Mathieu Kauffmann. Long term viticultural manager Werner Sebastian remains responsible for the vineyards.

The estate was founded back in 1849 by Franz Peter Buhl and came about as part of the distribution of the original Jordan estate into the three smaller estates: Bassermann-Jordan, Reichsrat von Buhl, and Dr. Deinhard. Within few years, von Buhl was recognized for its uncompromising quality. The estate quickly gained fame both on a national and international level. It was a Von Buhl Riesling wine that was used to toast the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.

Reichsrat von Buhl is fully organic and a member of the prestigious VDP.

Our Selections

Von Buhl Bone Dry Riesling 2022

Here at Reichsrat von Buhl we love dry wines. But we love `em really dry. According to the German wine law, dry can be up to 9 grams of residual sugar. But that‘s not really dry. At least not in our opinion. For us, dry means 0 to 4 grams of residual sugar. Basta~ On the bottle it says "trocken," dry, of course. After all, we do obey the law... but we have given it some thought and decided to create a label that allows one to visualize the bone dry taste profile. So we‘ve taken the classic flavors of Riesling and Rosé and had them arranged in a shape clearly linked to bones. Et voilà – von Buhl Bone Dry Riesling was born.

From variegated sandstone soils with some limestone, loess and clay. Carefully fermented and aged in stainless steel on the lees and bottled without any fining or other technical measures. This beautiful, bone-dry Riesling features notes of stone fruits and citrus, with a lively, animating and fresh palate. It's bone-tingly good!

12% Alc | 2.7 g/l RS | 6.8 g/l acidity

Von Buhl Bone Dry Rose 2022

Rosé is a matter of the heart for us. That‘s why we don‘t have the often typical saignée by-product of red wine vinification. For us, rosé is always an independent main product. 100% Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed and remain on the skins for 8-14 hours then directly pressed with only 50% juice extraction. Fermentation and maturation occur partially in stainless steel and partly in used barrique barrels. And of course, as indicated by our bone-dry label, there is almost no residual sugar. This is a delightful berry-scented Pinot Noir Rose that is bone-dry yet well balanced with great purity, mineral depth, and textural complexity that features vivid wild strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, and Meyer lemon flavors. 12% alcohol, 2.6 g/l RS, and 7.4 g/l acidity.

Von Buhl Riesling Pechstein GG 2019

The GG Pechstein vineyard is amongst the most distinctive sites of the Palatine. Nowhere can you find more volcanic basalt soil and nowhere does the basalt appear as clearly as in this wine. A one time active volcano, in primeval times the Pechsteinkopf above Forst dispersed large quantities of volcanic rock. In the bedrock of the Pechstein site there are therefore several strands of basalt, spreading throughout the end of the valley like a fan. Loose basalt scree can be found on the surface of the site. The Pechstein also has red variegated sandstone, weathered soils, and sandy loam over layers of clay and limestone. All of this leads to excellent mineral substance and perfect water retention.

Gentle fermentation in dopplestück 2400 liter barrels without any fining. Maturation on full yeast until July 2020. Wines from Pechstein pair well with the saltiness of matured hard cheese, all kinds of shellfish, crustaceans and noble fish. 12.5% Alc, 7.3 g/l acidity, 2.4 g/l RS

“The 2019er Pechstein Riesling GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, shows a superbly expressive and aromatic nose of ripe yellow fruits, some buttery elements, a hint of toffee, apricot, and coconut cream. The wine coats the palate with intense and ripe flavors of honeyed yellow fruits and leaves a straight and nicely focused feel in the very long and fully dry-tasting finish. There is still some tartness at play in the aftertaste. This ripe expression of dry Riesling is therefore still best left alone for another few years. 2023-2027 91 Points - Mosel Fine Wines, Issue 58 - Sept, 2021

Von Buhl Riesling Sekt Brut 2019

During the last few years, Reichsrat von Buhl has created their own style in the sparkling wine range and was able to achieve an inspiring level of quality. In the future it remains their intent to constantly improve and develop this style of sparkling Sekt wine. Grapes for this 100% Riesling were selectively handpicked from the top vineyards at Von Buhl. Only the first 50% of the pressing - the Cuvée - is used for the sparkling wine and is pressed directly after a short maceration period. Only the best Riesling grapes are pressed for this sparkling wine. The fermentation and maturation are partially in stainless steel and partially in dopplestück 2400-liter oak barrels. Afterwards, traditional bottle fermentation takes place for 32 (!) months on the yeast.

This a perfectly clear sparkler with cool pit fruit and fine notes of brioche on the nose. With fresh acidity, a firm palate and a creamy, piquant finish, this is an exceptional bubbly. 12.5% alc, 5.7 g/l RS, 8.8 g/l acidity.

Von Buhl Riesling Kabinett Armand 2022

Armand Buhl was the dazzling personality in the Von Buhl estate’s history. It was he who made the winery what it still is today – an internationally recognized leading wine estate. He was awarded the title Reichsrat of the Bavarian Crown for his contribution to politics, and he was instrumental in the opening of the Suez Canal, at which Von Buhl wine was served when the ribbon was cut. It is in honor of him that the Armand Kabinett is produced.

The wine is made in the same style as that which was served at the opening ceremony. With a fruity apricot nose and spectacular fireworks of acidity and mineral character on the palate, it never fails to make fans.

100% Riesling from white and yellow variegated sandstone, the wine is carefully fermented and aged in stainless steel on the lees for 16 weeks and bottled without fining. 9.5% alc, 47.7 RS, 7.6 g/l RS.
